Know About the Link between Cancer and HPV

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is an STI which virus leads to abnormal growth of the tissue and cells. Mainly it transfers from person-to-person via skin-to-skin contact at the time of sex.  There are above 100 varied strains (types) of HPV most of them are regarded as low-risk as they only lead to genital warts.

A few high-risk HPV strains possess the ability to develop cancer. But most people with HPV infection don’t develop cancer yet you should follow certain ways to stay protected against HPV infection and cancer in the long run.

Varied Types of Cancer Resulted From HPV

As per the last survey, HPV especially the high-risk strains result in approx 5% cancers worldwide. But its includes;

  • Oropharyngeal (throat)
  • Vulvar and vaginal
  • Neck and head
  • Anal
  • Cervical

Basically, 12-14 strains of HPV are highly risky yet 18 and 16 are prime culprit for developing the cancers in the human body. Amongst numbers of strains these two are responsible for causing cervical cancers. Even it can lead to the occurrence of penile, vulvar, vaginal and oropharyngeal cancers as well.

Though cervical cancer is the most common cancer type related to the HPV but recently oropharyngeal cancer exceeds the number in the United Kingdom. Now, it is recognised as the most common HPV-causing cancer in men in the country.

In What Ways Cancers Resulted From HPV

In general, high-risk HPV invades the healthy cells of anus, penis, vagina, vulva, oropharynx and cervix. If left untreated for a long period of time then, it results in certain changes to the cells. Over time these changes in the cells lead to the occurrence of cancers in both men and women despite the age factor. But luckily, most HPV infections get cleared on their own prior to lead to precancerous changes. At the same time, it can be the persistent infection with risky subtype that leads to the occurrence of cancer.

The Ways the Probability of HPV-related Cancer Can Alleviate

Prevention against the chance of HPV contraction is the very first step you should take to alleviate its risk of development. Despite the gender, HPV vaccination is highly suggested to the children of 9-14 years of age as every person remains prone of HPV vaccination till 26 years of age. Furthermore, after counselling if it is necessary you may have to get vaccinated till the age of 45.

Women above 21 years of age should undergo cervical screening by the Pap smear till 30 years of age once in every 3 years. After that both Pap and HPV test in London should be done together once in every 5 years only if the previous reports are absolutely fine. Person with abnormal result should undergo testing more often.

Vaccines

Vaccination is the best way to stay protected from cancer-causing HPV infections. As there are a number of vaccines reliably used for the prevention of certain types of HPV, Gardasil is the approved one in the UK. It is so; because it can combat against 7 strains of HPV most of which cause cancers via skin-to-skin contact.

Even it protects you from 2 HPV types (11 and 6) due to which genital warts can be emerged. According to CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention), HPV vaccination should be taken by both males and females ranging from 9-14 years of age. If you get vaccinated specifically at the time of 11-12 years, it works effectively in the body.

Moreover, it is best to get vaccinated prior to become sexually active. You can do so by booking same day STD testing in nearby STI clinic to check the sexual health status. Otherwise, once you get infected with HPV virus it becomes troublesome for the vaccine to prevent the occurrence of cervical cancer.

Safe Sex

HPV contraction risk can be reduced to half by using condom every time you are engaging in sex. However, even by using the condom you are prone to get contracted with HPV via the areas which are left exposed by it.

That’s why it is not recognised as the ideal substitute for HPV vaccination. But condoms definitely protect you from certain strains of HPV along with other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections).

Pap Tests

Pap test is helpful for detecting any abnormality in your cervix. It mainly traces the pre-cancerous cells in the cervix. Cervical cells are collected as the sample to perform this test. If necessary, HPV test can also be performed followed by Pap test.
