Fun inside: the best things to do inside for people living with a disability

people living with a disability

Having a fun, passionate hobby is good for everyone’s mental health. And, although Melbourne has spent much of the last two years indoors, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of hobbies that can be taken on indoors! This is the same for people living with a disability, as physical and mental activities are important for growing and maintaining a sense of health and wellbeing. It’s known all across the world that engaging in regular activities is great for our minds and bodies, and can help us achieve a much more positive outlook on life.

With this in mind, here are some top indoor activities to organise whether you’re at a disability centre in Melbourne or provide home care for people living with a disability.

  1. Painting

Painting, like any art form, is great for mental health. It stimulates the brain and creates a pathway of expression that is always a wonderfully positive experience. What’s great about painting is that it’s not too difficult, or expensive, to get started with.

All you really need is some brushes, paints, boards and, if you really want, some canvases and an easel and you can start a super fun and creative activity.

2. Reading

Reading is great for many things: it enhances cognitive ability, it widens our vocabulary and sparks creativity in us that can be taken into other hobbies. We’ve always known reading to be one of the best things for our brains, and it can also lead to other hobbies like writing – another wonderfully creative and enjoyable passion.

3. Cooking

Cooking is great for the soul. It inspires the senses and brings a burst of colour and fragrance into your life that no other art form can really do! It is also a great activity to do with someone living with a disability as it can help provide them the confidence they need to prepare their own meals down the line.

4. Baking
On that note, who doesn’t love a spot of baking, too? There is nothing more nourishing than the smell of delightful bread or a fresh cake forming in the oven, and it is a really wholesome activity that brings out everyone’s creative side.

What’s more, baking is often a highly social activity, with plenty of social groups holding baking hang outs that could be perfect for your client if it’s something they would want to do in the future.

5. Board games

Board games are great because they are an awesome way to pass the time in a fun and wholesome way. Everyone has loved their favourite board games a little bit more in the past couple of years, what with not being able to go out that much, and they are also a great way to improve problem solving skills and cognitive function.

6. Language learning

Language learning is such a fun and rewarding activity, and the best thing about it is that you can go at your own pace! There is nothing more satisfying than when you notice that your skills as a polyglot are improving and that you can understand, and even converse, in your chosen language.

What’s more, it’s a great activity to pass the time inside, and you can do it in many ways, including listening to music, watching films, conversing with a native speaker and, of course, the typical, studious methods like text books and private tutoring (tutors are offering classes through Zoom, making it easy for anyone to start!).

For people with a disability such activities are very important
